Best Tonneau Covers for Toyota Tacoma (2016–2026)
Short answer
The best tonneau cover for most Tacoma owners is the BAKFlip MX4, a hard folding cover sold for both the 2016–2023 and 2024–2026 Tacoma that keeps your deck rails in use. The TruXedo Lo Pro is the best soft roll-up, and the TruXport is the budget pick. Buy a cover listed for your exact generation: 2024+ Tacomas have a redesigned bed, and 2016–2023 covers aren’t a safe bet.

The Tacoma is one of the trickier trucks to fit a cover to. It has lipless bed rails and Toyota’s prominent Deck Rail system, and each style of cover attaches to those rails differently. Some keep your cargo cleats fully usable; others limit how far they slide.
Then there’s the generation split. The fourth-generation Tacoma that arrived for 2024 has a new bed, and covers made for 2016–2023 trucks generally have separate part numbers. This guide sorts out both problems and shows which covers fit which Tacoma.
How I picked: I compared covers using maker specs and fitment listings, published reviews and owner reports from truck forums. I don't test covers my selves. TruckBedFit is reader-supported; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you.

UnderCover Ultra Flex | Hard folding | MX4 alternative for 2024+ | 4th gen | Check listing | 5 years | Premium |

Each cover is sold in separate versions by generation and bed length. The fitment section below shows what to look for.
Tacoma Fitment: Generation, Bed Length and Deck Rails
Step 1: Know your generation
Generation | Years | What it means for covers |
2nd gen | 2005–2015 | Separate covers; many listed with the deck rail system |
3rd gen | 2016–2023 | The largest selection; most listings say “2016–2023” |
4th gen | 2024–2026 | Redesigned bed; buy covers listed for 2024+ |
On the 4th gen, be skeptical of any seller that simply extends an older listing. On the Tacoma4G forum, an owner described a seller that changed a 2016–2023 cover listing to “2016–2024” and insisted it fit, while other owners doubted a 2023 cover would fit a 2024. One owner pointed to Toyota describing the new bed as about 3 inches wider. Major brands like BAK and TruXedo sell separate 2024+ versions, and that’s what we recommend.
Step 2: Know your bed length
Your Tacoma | Bed | Cover listings usually say | Approx. inside length |
2016–2023 | Short | 5 ft | ~60.5 in |
2016–2023 | Long | 6 ft | 73.5 in |
2024–2026 | Short | 5 ft (some say 5.2 ft or 62") | ~60–62 in |
2024–2026 | Long | 6 ft (some say 6'2") | Check listing |
Listings for the 4th-gen short bed aren’t consistent. BAK lists its 2024+ short-bed MX4 for a 5 ft (60 in) bed, while one TruXport listing describes the same truck’s bed as 5.2 ft (62 in). They’re the same bed; match the year range and “short” or “long” rather than the exact number. Not sure which you have? Use our truck bed measuring guide.
Step 3: Check your deck rails
Many 2024+ listings require the factory Deck Rail system. BAK’s 2024–2026 MX4 listing notes that installation requires the Deck Rail system and that Toyota sells the rails if your truck doesn’t have them. TruXedo’s 2024+ Lo Pro listing carries the same note.
Step 4: Check for bed storage boxes
Some listings exclude Tacomas with in-bed storage boxes, such as the Trail Edition. If your bed has factory storage bins, look for a listing that names them or check with the seller.
What Happens to Your Deck Rails With Each Cover Type
This is the question Tacoma owners ask most. RealTruck, which sells all the major brands, explains how each style mounts:
Cover type | How it mounts on a Tacoma | Deck rails and cleats |
BAKFlip hard folders (2016+) | Deck rails come off during install and go back on lower, using drop brackets | Rails, cleats and bulkhead tie-downs stay usable |
BAK Revolver hard roll-ups | Mount alongside the rails | Full use of the deck rails is kept |
Retractables (Retrax, GatorTrax) | Small brackets insert into the deck rail | Rails stay in place, but cleat movement is slightly limited |
Soft folding covers | A small hanger bracket attaches the cover to the deck rails | Rails stay in place |
TruXedo roll-ups | Larger brackets install into the deck rail system to support the cover’s rails | Rails and bulkhead tie-downs kept; cleat movement slightly limited how tonneau covers affect toyota tacoma deck rails +7 |
If you use your cleats a lot to tie down gear, a BAKFlip or Revolver keeps them most usable.
The Best Tacoma Tonneau Covers in Detail
1. BAKFlip MX4: Best Overall
The MX4 is the hard folder Tacoma owners shortlist most, and it’s the safest cover for keeping your deck rail system fully usable.

Tacoma versions: 2024–2026 5 ft bed (part 448446) and 2024 6'2" bed with deck rail (part 448447); a T-slot version (449446TS) adds tracks for overhead racks on the 2024+ short bed; separate 2016–2023 and 2005–2015 versions RealTruck BAKFlip MX4 (GEN 3) Hard Folding Tonneau Cover Fits 2024-2026 Toyota Tacoma, 5' Bed (BAK-448446) +2
Load rating: 400 lb evenly distributed
Bed access: folds against the cab for full bed access
Weather: revised EPDM rubber perimeter seals on the current third-generation design
Install: clamp-on, no drilling
Warranty: 5 years
What owners report: A 2016 Tacoma owner on TacomaWorld found his MX4 leaked until he reinstalled the side rails at a true 90 degrees, which is a useful lesson for any folding cover. On the 2024+ truck, one buyer liked the cover itself but called the 2024 short-bed mounting poorly designed, because a thin adapter rail needs another set of clamps on each side. Expect a slower, fussier install on the new generation.
Verdict: The best all-round Tacoma cover, especially if you use your deck rails. Take your time with the rails during install.
2. UnderCover Ultra Flex: Best MX4 Alternative for 2024+
The Ultra Flex is the closest rival to the MX4, with the same warranty length and a carpeted underside.

Tacoma versions: 2024–2026 Tacoma 5 ft, across trims from SR to TRD Pro and Trailhunter
Tailgate seal: dual-action, so you can close the tailgate with the cover open or closed
Bed access: several riding positions, including full bed access
Install: clamp-on, using redesigned L-rails
Warranty: 5 years
What owners report: We found far fewer Tacoma-specific owner reports than for the MX4, so there’s less long-term evidence either way.
Verdict: Worth buying if it’s cheaper than the MX4 for your truck when you shop.
3. TruXedo Lo Pro: Best Soft Cover
The Lo Pro is the soft roll-up we’d put on most Tacomas. Its automatic tension keeps the vinyl tight in heat and cold, and the whole cover comes off in seconds.

Tacoma versions: 2024–2026 5 ft (part 556101) and 2024–2026 6'2" (part 557101), plus earlier-generation versions
Profile: sits only ¾ inch above the bed
Tension and sealing: a self-tensioning spring adjuster, hook-and-loop strips along the rails, and rubber seals at the bulkhead and tailgate
Removal: the entire cover removes in seconds without tools
Install: clamp-on, no drilling; 2024+ versions require the Deck Rail system
Warranty: limited lifetime
What owners report: Owners of TruXedo roll-ups report a quiet ride when tension is set correctly. Like any soft cover, it can be cut and isn’t built for heavy snow.
Verdict: The best Tacoma cover if you want light, removable and full bed access. For a flusher look, its sibling the TruXedo Pro X15, which comes with a lifetime warranty, is also listed for the 2024+ Tacoma.
4. TruXedo TruXport: Best Budget Cover
The TruXport is TruXedo’s entry-level soft roll-up and the lowest-priced pick here.

Tacoma versions: 2024–2025 Tacoma short bed (part 256101), deck rail required; earlier generations listed separately
Tension: pre-set, with manual adjustment
Bed access: full
Warranty: 5 years
What owners report: Budget soft covers get strong marks for keeping beds dry, with some flapping at highway speed if tension isn’t adjusted.
Verdict: The right buy if price comes first. Confirm a 2026 listing if you have a 2026 truck; the version we found lists 2024–2025.
5. RealTruck Sentry CT: Best Hard Roll-Up
The Sentry CT (sold under the TruXedo name) uses aluminum slats under a canvas skin, giving you a locking cover that still rolls fully out of the way without blocking the rear window. RealTruck’s own install video for it is filmed on a 2024 Tacoma.

Load rating: 400 lb evenly distributed
Security: locks, a tension cable and up to six automatic latches
Removal: quick-release, no tools
Warranty: 5 years on hard parts and fabric
What owners report: Long-term Tacoma-specific reports are still limited. If you have a 2016–2023 truck and want a hard roll-up that keeps your deck rails fully usable, also look at the BAK Revolver X4, which is listed for 3rd-gen Tacomas with the Deck Rail system; note that Revolver owners in cold climates report it can be hard to roll up below freezing.
Verdict: The best Tacoma pick if you want hard-cover security with roll-up convenience.
Tacoma Details to Check Before You Buy
Generation first. Don’t buy a 2016–2023 cover for a 2024+ truck because a seller says it fits. Look for a listing that names 2024+ explicitly.
Deck rails present. If your truck lacks the Deck Rail system, many 2024+ covers won’t install until you add it.
Cleat use. If you rely on deck rail cleats, choose a BAKFlip or Revolver, which keep them most usable.
Spray-in liners. RealTruck says its cover clamps adjust enough to fit over spray-in bed liners. Adhesive bulkhead seals may still need a clean, smooth surface; see our bulkhead seal guide.
Storage boxes. Some covers exclude Tacomas with in-bed storage bins.
Water. No tonneau cover is fully waterproof; side rails installed square and level make the biggest difference.
Installing a Tonneau Cover on a Tacoma
Confirm the version matches your generation, bed length and deck rail setup.
Remove or adjust the deck rails only if your cover’s instructions say so; BAKFlip covers reinstall them lower on drop brackets.
Clamp the side rails square to the bed. Rails set off true are the most common cause of leaks Tacoma owners report.
Fit the bulkhead seal flat against the front of the bed.
Adjust the latches so the cover meets the tailgate seal evenly, then test the tailgate.
Recheck all clamps after a week of driving.
